Layo & Bushwacka! provide the listener with an aural fusion of musical influences that have been instrumental in the development of the underground dance music scene. The common link between Matthew Bushwacka! B and Layo Paskin is influential underground DJ, producer and remixer, Mr. C.   Matthew B, following an apprenticeship with mobile rave crew The Ratpack, had come to meet Mr C and was offered a spot as trainee engineer in his Watershed studio, where he was to work with some of the giants of the credible dance world, such as Derrick Carter, Stacey Pullen and Juan Atkins.   Through Mr. C, Matthew was to meet Layo Paskin, who in 1993 was promoting the "Too Much Music" warehouse parties. At the time Layo and Mr. C were working together on the construction of a new concept venue called "The End", which opened in December 1995. Their idea was to have a club that married high aesthetic qualities with an uncompromising sound system. This was to be coupled with an inventive and forward thinking music policy, which was to bear fruit at flagship night Subterrain. In the main room British underground house and American techno was fused, whilst in the lounge Layo and Matthew B were to create a hybrid sound based on breakbeats, electro and the darker recesses of house, a sound Matthew had started to record and release on his Plank Records imprint.   The end result was released on in house label End Recordings as "Split Personality", the pair calling themselves The Usual Suspects. They were to change their name to Layo & Bushwacka! after the release of "NightStalkin" and "She Disrespek'Me", two singles that received a host of good reviews on release.   On top of the influence of the club, the pair were greatly affected by the experience of several global tours as The End Sound System with Mr C. Indeed the deep tribal work-out that is "Africa" was inspired by their visit to South Africa and is set to appear on an album based on the sound of Soweto which aims to raise money for charity. "Africa" is also a track that aptly mirrors the pair's fascinaition with film scores and sound tracks, a theme reflected, in the album, as Layo explains: "I love the creativity that goes in to soundtracks, and the sonic journey that matches the story of a film. That's why we joined the tracks on the album to make it a cohesive whole." Matt sums it up: "a tapestry of funk, if you like."   "Matthew and I had started DJ'ing at The End together, and I found that we had similar tastes in music," recounts Layo. "Then one day he was engineering a track on which I was working, and made a couple of very good suggestions, so we decided to do the track together." "Our Influences are very similar", explains Layo. "As well as a love of house music across the board, early American electro, hip-hop and breakbeat from the early 90's. And of course the club has been a massive influence, as we have the chance to hear the best DJ's in the world in all their respective styles, be it house, techno or drum & Bass.
